Start the Conversation: Because Relationships Matter

25 August 2026

Relationships are built on conversations. But sometimes, talking to the person closest to us can be the hardest conversation to start.

Maybe you and your partner keep having the same argument. Perhaps something has changed between you and you’re not sure how to talk about it. You might be navigating parenting, separation, intimacy, money worries or the impact of a past relationship. Or perhaps things simply don’t feel the way they used to.

You don’t need to have all the answers to recognise that something isn’t right.

At Kapella, relationships have been at the heart of what we do for almost 80 years. We provide relationship counselling and support for individuals, couples and families, helping people work through the difficulties, changes and pressures that can affect the relationships that matter to them.

And very often, it starts with a conversation.

Communication difficulties were an issue for 80% of the adults and couples supported by Kapella in 2025/26.

Talking sounds simple, but when emotions, history and everyday pressures are involved, communicating well can be incredibly difficult.

Small disagreements can turn into repeated arguments. Important things can go unsaid. We can become defensive, stop listening or avoid certain subjects because we’re worried about where the conversation might lead.

There doesn’t have to be one big event that causes problems in a relationship either. Work and money worries, parenting, physical and mental health, intimacy, caring responsibilities and changes within a family can all affect how we relate to one another.

Sometimes communication problems in a relationship become so familiar that it can be difficult to know how to change the pattern.

Having an important conversation doesn’t mean you need to know exactly what to say or what needs to happen next.

“Can we talk about how things have been feeling lately?”
“I feel like we keep having the same argument.”
“There’s something I’ve been struggling to talk about.”

Try to choose a time when you both have space to talk, rather than starting the conversation in the middle of an argument or when one of you is rushing somewhere. Give each other the opportunity to speak and, where you can, focus on how you are feeling rather than who is to blame.

The aim isn’t to solve everything in one conversation. Sometimes the first step is simply making space to listen, talk openly and better understand how each of you is feeling.

Relationships rarely stay exactly the same.

Having children, moving home, changing jobs, financial pressures, illness, bereavement, becoming a carer, children leaving home or simply growing and changing as individuals can all affect a couple’s relationship.

There can also be more difficult experiences to navigate, including loss of trust, affairs, sexual or intimacy problems, separation and divorce.

Experiencing difficulties doesn’t automatically mean a relationship has failed. It may mean that something needs attention, a different way of communicating or some additional relationship support.

You don’t have to wait until your relationship reaches breaking point before asking for help.

Relationship counselling can support couples experiencing difficulties with communication, trust, intimacy, parenting, separation or other changes in their relationship. It can also provide an opportunity to step away from the pressures of everyday life and have conversations that may have become difficult to have at home.

Counselling isn’t about taking sides or deciding who is right or wrong. It offers a confidential and supportive space to explore what is happening, understand different perspectives and consider what you would like to change.

You can attend relationship counselling together or on your own. Support can be helpful at many different stages of a relationship, whether you want to strengthen your relationship, work through a particular difficulty, rebuild trust or navigate separation in a healthier way.

Whether you think of it as relationship counselling, couples counselling or couples therapy, you don’t need to wait until things feel beyond repair before reaching out for support.

Kapella began in 1946 as Birmingham Marriage Guidance and later became Relate Birmingham. Today, as an independent local charity, relationships remain central to who we are.

We provide affordable relationship counselling in Birmingham, Solihull, Wolverhampton and across the wider West Midlands, supporting individuals and couples through relationship difficulties and change.

Our wider services include family counselling, sex therapy, family mediation and counselling and wellbeing support for individuals, children and young people. Support is available through face-to-face and online appointments.

Relationships can be complicated. Conversations can be difficult. Asking for support can feel like a big step.

But you don’t need to have the right words.

You don’t need to know what happens next.

Sometimes, you just need somewhere to start.
